UnidosUS Statement on Senate Confirmation of Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court

October 6, 2018

WASHINGTON, DC—UnidosUS (formerly NCLR) President and CEO Janet Murguía issued this statement on the vote to confirm Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh:

“Today’s rush to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to a lifetime position to the highest court in the land is devastating to millions of Americans. We had opposed Kavanaugh on his judicial record at the onset, and once aware of the serious allegations of sexual assault and having witnessed his stunningly partisan, hyper-aggressive performance before the Judiciary Committee, our concerns with his appointment further deepened and our opposition to the nomination grew tenfold.

We are outraged at the treatment that some senators and the president have given to the brave women who have come forward with their accounts of abuse and assault. This behavior is inconsistent with our values as a nation and their vote in support of his confirmation knowingly and willingly places a person of questionable moral character—and an openly partisan judge—on a court tasked with defending the constitutional rights of all Americans. This confirmation undermines the integrity of this independent body and places in peril the court's impartiality.”
