House GOP Effort to Impeach Fails in 214-216 Vote

 

Washington, DC — UnidosUS, the nation’s largest Latino civil rights organization, issued the following statement from President and CEO Janet Murguía in response to today’s failed effort to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas:

“We’re glad enough members of Congress recognized this was a baseless impeachment effort and pulled the plug on charging Secretary Mayorkas for serious crimes that are plain to see he did not commit.

“Throughout his career, Secretary Mayorkas has been a dedicated public servant who understands the importance of prosecutorial discretion in immigration policy. He has played a significant role in impactful policies that have restored the rule of law and had bipartisan support—including the Obama administration’s DACA policy which has benefited our economy and communities nationwide.

“Reasonable people can have disagreements on DHS policy, as we have at times. But pursuing an unjustified impeachment of a dedicated public servant and the first Hispanic secretary of Homeland Security is not in the interests of the American people.”
