UnidosUS HOME Awards $1.1 Million in Grants to Organizations Working to Address America’s Housing Supply Crisis and Empower Latinos Through Homeownership

18 grantees across 14 U.S. states and territories will help advance Latino homeownership as part of the Home Ownership Means Equity (HOME) initiative’s goal of creating 4 million new Hispanic homeowners by 2030

Las Vegas, Nevada, July 17, 2024 – At the 2024 UnidosUS Annual Conference: Our Time is Now, in Las Vegas today, the UnidosUS HOME (Home Ownership Means Equity) initiative announced it will award $1.1 million in grants to local housing organizations working to make homeownership a reality for Latinos across the country.

The grants were awarded through HOME’s national competition, Premio HOME. Eighteen (18) organizations from 14 states and territories across the U.S. were selected as winners and runners up for their innovative solutions to address America’s housing supply crisis, including through construction and design, ownership models, and climate resiliency.

“Housing prices in America have far outpaced increases in income, particularly for Latinos, and solution-oriented interventions like Premio HOME are vital in securing access to homeownership for this powerful community that is foundational to America’s real estate sector and broader economy,” said Janet Murguía, President and CEO of UnidosUS

“The finalists, runners up, and honorary mentions of Premio HOME represent the best of Latino innovation and entrepreneurship. UnidosUS is proud to invest in and partner alongside them to address America’s housing supply crisis and empower Latino communities by expanding Latino homeownership.”

The winners of the 2024 Premio HOME competition join the initiative as HOME’s second Affiliate group, following the first Affiliate group in 2023, which focused on boosting Latino mortgage readiness. This year’s Premio HOME grantees include nine finalists and nine runners up, with four additional organizations receiving honorary mentions. In addition to funding to participate in the UnidosUS 2024 Annual Conference, finalists will receive grants ranging from $75,000-$100,000, and runners up will receive grants ranging from $25,000-$50,000.

Finalists include:

“As a long-time Affiliate, East LA Community Corporation is grateful to UnidosUS for its steadfast support, and this new grant under Premio HOME will only strengthen our efforts to increase LA’s housing supply using ADU’s to boost Latino homeownership rates,” said Monica Mejia, President of East LA Community Corporation. “We are proud to be a part of UnidosUS’s network of 300+ Affiliates, which is driving important conversations, removing barriers, and innovating to propel the economic trajectory of Latinos.”

“Durham Community Land Trustees is thrilled to receive this investment and institutional support from the UnidosUS HOME initiative, which will bolster our work to innovate America’s housing supply and expand Latino homeownership,” said Sherry Taylor, Executive Director of Durham Community Land Trustees. “Durham has one of the toughest real estate markets in the country, and while our Latino community is persevering to ensure their families’ financial security and future, DCLT’s partnership with HOME creates much-needed opportunity to test our ideas for catalyzing local Latino homeownership rates.”

“The Resurrection Project (TRP) has a 34-year legacy of championing Latino homeownership in Southwest Chicago,” said Raul I. Raymundo, CEO and Co-founder of The Resurrection Project. “TRP is honored to receive the Premio award and remain steadfast in our commitment to advancing Latino homeownership, mirroring the shared vision of the UnidosUS HOME initiative: creating opportunities for new Latino homeowners and creating generational wealth.”

UnidosUS, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that serves as the nation’s largest Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization, launched the HOME initiative on Capitol Hill in June 2023 to catalyze a national movement to transform the economic trajectory of Latino families and create 4 million new Latino homeowners by 2030.

Today’s Premio HOME announcement follows HOME’s first anniversary and several major recent announcements, including multi-million-dollar funding partnerships with JPMorganChase, PNC Bank, Constellation Brands, Inc., and Modelo, alongside Wells Fargo’s initial anchor funding in 2023. Premio HOME is a centerpiece of HOME’s work in its second year.

Four of the Premio HOME finalists participated in the HOME Plenary at the 2024 Annual Conference in Las Vegas on July 17 to present their organizations’ strategies and solutions to address housing supply issues.

The Plenary also included a keynote address from Adrianne Todman, Acting Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and a fireside with Acting Secretary Todman and Annie Donovan, President and CEO of Raza Development Fund.
