UnidosUS Hails U.S. Supreme Court for Stopping Unlawful Militarization of Chicago
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld rulings from a federal district court in Illinois and the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals that had paused the Trump administration’s unlawful deployment of National Guard troops in Chicago.
UnidosUS President and CEO Janet Murguía issued the following statement in response:
“Today’s ruling by the Supreme Court is a victory for civil rights and the rule of law, and a major and overdue defeat for the Trump administration’s brazen overreach and abuse of power.
“The Court reaffirmed that National Guard troops cannot be deployed unnecessarily and in clear violation of the law.
“Thanks to this decision, we are well on our way to ending the unlawful and unconscionable use of the military by the Trump administration against its own citizens — not only in Chicago, but across the country.”
In September, UnidosUS led civil rights and advocacy organizations in a letter sent to federal lawmakers calling on Congress to take immediate action to stop the unlawful deployment of military forces in U.S. cities.
