UnidosUS Condemns U.S. Senate for Passing President Trump’s Cruel, Costly and Harmful Federal Budget Bill

U.S. Senate bill ignores voter sentiment and will devastate American families across the country.

WASHINGTON, DC — Despite strong opposition to cuts from Latino voters and the broader public, today the U.S. Senate passed legislation that would impose deep funding cuts to health care, food assistance, education and other essential programs for the vast majority of America’s working families and increases funding for the Department of Homeland Security’s cruel, chaotic and unlawful mass deportation efforts. The legislation passed 51-50, with Vice President JD Vance casting the tie-breaking vote, and now moves to the U.S. House of Representatives for confirmation.

UnidosUS President and CEO Janet Murguía issued the following statement in response:

“This bill is nothing more than a big, broken promise to the American people. Despite continued calls and warnings from across the nation on how this cruel, costly and harmful bill would deeply harm working families, the U.S. Senate today sided with the country’s wealthiest of Americans instead of the majority of the electorate — including Latino voters — who voted them into office. Make no mistake, this bill betrays the trust of millions of U.S. voters who placed their hopes on this Congress and the president to address inflation and the high costs of living, and nothing in this bill will bring down costs or make housing more affordable.

“If the bill is passed by the U.S. House of Representatives and signed into law, it will make life much harder for most Americans over the next decade or more. Our families, and especially our children, will pay the price as the bill makes the largest cuts to health and food programs in U.S. history. At a time when working families are scrambling to get by, they will lose critical support, pay more for everyday necessities and see their communities ripped apart as the administration will use the funds to turbocharge its chaotic, malicious and unlawful deportation machine. The type of abuse and indiscriminate raids we are seeing in cities like Los Angeles will only increase and worsen with this bill — with more than $150 billion in unchecked funds for immigration enforcement.

“We must recognize that history will remember this vote. Not as a moment of leadership, but as a shameful decision to turn its back on working families and sacrifice their future. UnidosUS will continue to champion the priorities of American voters and hold Congress accountable for the consequences of this reckless and deeply harmful legislation.”
