UnidosUS Condemns the Supreme Court’s Annihilation of the Voting Rights Act

WASHINGTON —   Today, Janet Murguía, president and CEO of UnidosUS, the nation’s largest Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization, issued the following statement in reaction to the U.S. Supreme Court decision to functionally dismantle Section II of the Voting Rights Act in Louisiana v. Callais:

“Today is a dark day for American democracy. This Supreme Court’s decision puts another nail in the coffin of the Voting Rights Act. The court has chosen, as it signaled wanting to do for years, to eviscerate the safeguards enacted by Congress to protect the voting power and choices of minority voters.

“As Justice Elena Kagan stated in her dissent, ‘the Court’s decision will set back the foundational right Congress granted of racial equality in electoral opportunity.’ It is evident that we must continue to come together and do everything we can to protect our fundamental right to fully participate and be represented in our democracy. We call on all voters to ensure they are registered to vote, and to exercise their right to vote. We will not be silenced.”
