UnidosUS Condemns Detention of Gámez-Cuéllar Family and Calls on U.S. Congress to Enforce Meaningful Immigration Guardrails
McAllen, Texas – Today, UnidosUS Texas State Director Eric Holguín issued the following statement in reaction to the detention of the Gámez-Cuéllar family, who were wrongfully detained by immigration authorities despite complying with the legal immigration process and attending required check-ins:
“We are relieved for the Gámez-Cuéllar family and their release from federal detention, but no family should have to endure detention before common sense prevails. The wrongful detention of these young musicians is exactly why we continue to urge Congress to enforce meaningful protections against unlawful immigration enforcement and to target real threats, not children and families following the law. Lawmakers cannot condemn incidents like this while voting to expand funding for ICE and DHS without the safeguards needed to prevent them. Our communities deserve protection, accountability and respect for their constitutional rights.”
