PRESS CALL: National Civil Rights Leaders to Condemn Texas SB4 and Outline Pervasive Consequences

WASHINGTON, D.C.— On a telephonic press briefing this Wednesday, May 10, at 11 a.m. EST, national civil rights leaders and legal experts will gather to condemn Texas Senate Bill 4, the virulently anti–civil rights, anti-immigrant, and anti–public safety law that includes a provision similar to Arizona’s infamous “show me your papers” law. This past Sunday evening, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed the legislation, and the law is now set to go into effect September 2017. They will discuss the political, economic and social consequences of this new law, as well as upcoming legal battles, including a lawsuit filed against MALDEF by the state of Texas for standing up for immigrant rights.

While Governor Abbott frames the law as a strike against “those that seek to promote lawlessness in Texas,” police chiefs and law enforcement voices in the Lone Star State have been among the most outspoken against the law. The new legislation undermines the public safety of all Texans, as immigrants will be too afraid to report crimes or serve as witnesses, and it will deplete local law enforcement resources. Further, as it authorizes repeated interrogation of people who look or sound like they might have immigrant roots, it is poised to diminish the civil rights of millions. And, finally, as the law mandates collusion with Trump’s deportation force, the law will accelerate the Trump administration’s unconscionable attempt to expel millions of hardworking immigrants from the country.
