UnidosUS Virtual Townhall Shows COVID-19 Leaves Latino Renters Particularly Vulnerable

“COVID-19 Crisis – What is Happening to Latino Renters” tonight at 6 p.m. ET

WASHINGTON, DC— UnidosUS (formerly National Council of La Raza), the nation’s largest Latino civil rights organization, will host a virtual town hall tonight at 6 pm ET titled, “COVID-19 Crisis— What is Happening to Latino Renters” detailing the country’s current housing crisis and its disproportionate impact on Latino renters.

U.S. Rep. Jesús G. “Chuy” García and MEDA CEO Luis Granados will join affected Latino renters as part of this panel discussion focused on making sure Latino families can stay safely at home during the pandemic. The virtual event will be moderated by Linda Yvette Chavez and Marvin Lemus, the creators of the Netflix series “Gentefied.”

“Latino families across this country are currently in fear of losing their homes because they’re unable to pay their rents,” said UnidosUS President and CEO Janet Murguía. “Evicting people from their houses during a pandemic will put people at higher risk of COVID-19 and is an egregious action to take against people who have lost wages or jobs due to this pandemic. The Latino community, which has been disproportionately affected, needs immediate solutions from the state and federal government to prevent evictions and keep them safe.”

Tonight’s event coincides with the release of the UnidosUS report, Struggling to Stay Home: Latino Renters in the COVID-19 Pandemic, which further illustrates the dire housing situation facing Hispanics across the country. During the pandemic’s peak, more Latino renters said they could not make rent the previous month compared to the general population, as nearly one in three Latinos recently reported to be behind on their rent payments.
