The President And His Party Inflict A Completely Avoidable Shutdown On The Country
WASHINGTON, DC—At midnight today, President Trump and House Republican members will force a partial shutdown of the government by refusing to advance a unanimously passed Senate continuing resolution that, while seven weeks long, would have at least prevented a shutdown. The following is a statement by Janet Murguía, President and CEO of UnidosUS:
“This is no way to govern. President Trump and House Republicans have shown a complete disregard for taxpayers, and the hundreds of thousands of workers and their families who will be impacted by this completely avoidable shutdown. And to add insult to injury, the president is inflicting this shutdown on the country to extract $5 billion in funding for an unpopular and misguided border wall that the majority of Americans oppose.
It’s time to stop playing games with our government, with workers, and with the nation’s immigration system. The government needs to reopen, and the border wall, a monument to the president’s ego and to xenophobia, needs to be rejected once and for all.”
