UnidosUS and National Urban League: Communities of Color Will Face Devastating Consequences if GOP Tax Bill Passes

Tax cut for the rich will gut middle and lower income families

WASHINGTON, DC—Today, UnidosUS (formerly NCLR) President and CEO, Janet Murguia was joined by Marc Morial, President of the National Urban League (NUL) on a telephonic press conference to highlight the devastating consequences for communities of color if the GOP passes its proposed tax plan. The tax giveaway to the reach will give the top 1% $1.4 trillion in tax cuts while leaving working and middle class families to fend for themselves.

Seven in ten Latino families—those earning less than $75,000 per year—will face a tax increase under the bill. Meanwhile, programs like Medicaid, Medicare, subsidies for health insurance under the ACA will face drastic cuts of over $1.8 trillion. Reducing funding for these programs threaten millions of Latino and Black families and their ability to provide for basic needs like food and housing.

“Passing this tax plan is not only irresponsible, it is reckless and endangers the quality of life for millions of our nation’s children. Our communities will stand up for our children. They will stand up for the future of our country. And they will do that using the power of their voice and the power of their vote. Congress’ leaders and the Administration – you are on notice,” said Janet Murguia, President and CEO, UnidosUS.

If passed in its current form, the tax bill would also strip away crucial tax credits from some working families, reduce the state and local tax deduction used by millions of working families and do nothing to help minority owned businesses create jobs and contribute in greater quantities to the economy.
