House Passes Tax Give Away to the Nation’s Rich at the Expense of the Working- and Middle-Class

WASHINGTON, DC—Today, UnidosUS (formerly NCLR) denounced the passage of the GOP/Trump tax plan, which would cut taxes for the wealthy and large corporations and make working families and children pay. Despite touting an “early Christmas present” for Americans, the GOP tax plan would increase taxes on millions of working- and middle-class families, plunging many back into poverty.

“This tax plan is an attempt to scam American taxpayers into thinking the GOP is delivering a middle-class tax cut. Nothing could be further from the truth. This plan takes money from nearly 36 million middle-class families and gives to those who least need it—the richest Americans and largest corporations,” said Janet Murguía, President and CEO, UnidosUS.

To pay for tax massive tax cuts, Republicans in Congress will look to enact equally massive cuts to programs that help working families including Medicaid, Medicare, nutrition assistance and affordable housing services. The cuts will affect millions of Latino families, including nearly 11 million children who rely on Medicaid to stay healthy. The bill also threatens critical anti-poverty measures like the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit that help lift about four million Latinos out of poverty every year.

“This plan would spell disaster for millions of families and add at least $1.5 trillion to the national debt that future generations would have to pay for,” concluded Murguía.
