PHOENIX—Monday, July 10 is the last full day of the 2017 NCLR Annual Conference and National Latino Family Expo®, and the program continues to deliver an exciting lineup of speakers and events.

Breakfast will feature the pop duo Jesse and Joy, Olympic gold medalist Laurie Hernandez and Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt, then the day continues with a workshop on the racial wealth gap and luncheon remarks from UPS CEO David Abney, MSBNC Republican political analyst Michael Steele and Maricopa Sheriff Paul Penzone. A straw poll on health coverage will be released at an afternoon press conference at which NCLR President and CEO Janet Murguía, Representative Ruben Gallego, and Families USA Executive Director Frederick Isasi will address the pending Senate GOP health bill. A health town hall will include insight from California Primary Care Association President and CEO Carmela Castellano-Garcia and National Hispanic Medical Association President and CEO Dr. Elena Rios.

The Conference will close after the 8 p.m. NCLR Awards Gala, with a program that recognizes awardees Elisa de la Vara, Chief Community Officer, Arizona Community Foundation; Lalo Alcaraz, cartoonist, author and activist; Phoenix advocacy group BAZTA Arpaio; Earl Watson, Head Coach of the Phoenix Suns; San Diego nonprofit MAAC; and Bank of America.

The keynote speaker at this breakfast event will be Anti-Defamation League National Director and CEO Jonathan Greenblatt, who will be joined by Olympic gold medalist and author Laurie Hernandez, TV commentator and writer Alicia Menendez, with a special appearance by the Latin Grammy award-winning pop duo Jesse and Joy.

National Latino Family Expo

It’s your last chance to enjoy the National Latino Family Expo! With more than 150 exhibitors, six unique pavilions, informative resources, health screenings and entertainment, there is something for everyone. Children can enjoy a toddler play area, get free backpacks, and attend storytime with their favorite PBS characters including Daniel Tiger or Curious George from PBS Kids, Nickelodeon’s Dora the Explorer, the GEICO gecko, the Phoenix Suns’ Gorilla and more. There will be an opportunity to interact with potential local employers looking to recruit local talent, and people of all ages will enjoy prizes, giveaways, and innovative displays of cars and art celebrating Latino heritage.

Against the Backdrop of Economic Populism: Challenges and Opportunities for Closing the Racial Wealth Gap

Prosperity Now Vice President of Policy and Research Jeremie Greer joins NCLR Senior Economic Policy Analyst Marisabel Torres, the Center for American Progress Director of Consumer Finance Joe Valenti, and Vice President and Housing Director Herb Jackson from the Greater Phoenix Urban League in looking at the growing challenge of income inequality for communities of color. This panel will discuss the looming threats to our ability to close the racial wealth gap and how the Asset Building Policy Network—a group of civil rights, advocacy, community development organizations and a financial institution—is working to close this gap.

MSNBC’s Mariana Atencio and Representative Ruben Gallego will extend a warm welcome to attendees at this luncheon that will feature remarks from UPS Chairman and CEO David Abney, Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone and keynote speaker Michael Steele, MSNBC Republican political analyst and the first African American to have served as Republican National Committee Chairperson.

NCLR President and CEO Janet Murguía will release results from a straw poll of conference participants on health coverage and the pending Senate GOP health bill. She will be joined at this press event by Rep. Ruben Gallego, Families USA Executive Director Frederick Isasi, and Arizona residents and community leaders who can speak to the local impact on Latinos from this bill’s severe cuts to Medicaid and other financial assistance for coverage.

Town Hall: Protecting and Defending Our Gains in Health Care

This in-depth discussion will look at the health coverage gains from the Affordable Care Act and the threat posed by current legislation that could slash more than $700 billion from Medicaid and leave over 22 million Americans without coverage. California Primary Care Association President and CEO Carmela Castellano-Garcia and National Hispanic Medical Association President and CEO Dr. Elena Rios will join Rep. Gallego and Families USA’s Frederick Isasi after the press briefing to consider what’s at stake, who are the winners and losers, and how we can advocate and advance good policy solutions that protect the most vulnerable members of our communities and create a more equitable health care system for all Americans.

NCLR Deputy Vice President Clarissa Martinez De Castro will lead a panel that explores how civil rights and social justice organizations can work together to establish an accurate story of who we are as a country and advance a positive vision of our nation’s shared future that entices us to rise above fear and taps into the strength of our diversity to foster a collaborative spirit among America’s communities. Panelists include Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum President & CEO Kathy Ko Chin, National Congress of American Indians Executive Director Jacqueline Pata, and PICO National Network Political Director Bishop Dwayne Royster.
