UnidosUS Statement: White House Plays for Time with DREAMers’ Lives
Latest gambit just another attempt to end DACA
WASHINGTON, DC—Following today’s announcement that the Department of Homeland Security would no longer accept new DACA applications pending a “comprehensive review,” UnidosUS President and CEO Janet Murguía issued the following statement:
“Here we go again. Today the Trump administration launched yet another attack on the wildly popular and successful DACA program. Its latest memo would reject new DACA applications and shorten the period of protection from deportation from two years to one for those young people who must renew their status.
“Let’s not kid ourselves: The Trump administration has no intention of reviewing the program. Their lawlessness was recently called out by a federal court, and this seems like a backdoor attempt to defy the Supreme Court decision. They’re playing for time as they rack their brains about how to end the program once and for all.
“We join the overwhelming number of Americans who support DREAMers. We will continue to fight for our young people, many of whom today are on the frontlines of the COVID-19 response. And, we are clearer than ever: The stakes for our community could not be higher as we head to November.”
