For the third day of Conference highlights include the Monday Luncheon’s Unidos We Stand Civil Rights panel featuring prominent civil rights leaders; a plenary session on the role Hispanics play in our economy and their personal financial future and a press briefing on the impact of the Latino vote in the upcoming midterms

WASHINGTON, DC—Monday July 9, is the last full day of the 2018 UnidosUS Annual Conference and will kick off with civil rights luncheon panel moderated by UnidosUS President and CEO Janet Murguía and feature Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign; Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights; Sherrilyn Ifill, president and Director-Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund; Maria Teresa Kumar, president and CEO of Voto Latino and Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress.

Other notable events of the day include a press briefing titled, “Latino Tipping Point: How Latinos Are Poised to Impact Key Districts in the Midterm Elections” and a plenary session, “Hispanics Fuel the U.S. Economy, So Why Is Our Personal Financial Future at Risk?” which will focus on the importance of building a better financial future to empower Hispanic families, communities and the country’s economy.

The Conference will close after the UnidosUS Awards Gala, with a program that recognizes awardees UnidosUS Affiliate PODER, a nonprofit organization based in Chicago; Sonia Gutiérrez, President Emeritus and Founder of the Carlos Rosario International Public Charter School; Lourdes Meluzá, a highly esteemed national news correspondent and Ruby Jade Corado, a grassroots legend and head of Casa Ruby and The Ford Foundation.

Color Commentary: The Diversity Challenge in News Media and Coverage of Communities of Color

This workshop will feature minority journalists providing their unique perspectives and experience with diverse representation the newsroom and in the stories they report on. The discussion will highlight diversity and inclusion in media, and the portrayal of communities of color in more objective and meaningful ways. Speakers include The Hill reporter Rafael Bernal, a multimedia journalist and producer from NowThis Melissa Fajardo and three-time Emmy-Nominated producer and hub editor for the Washington Post Melissa Macaya.

Violence, Trauma and Resiliency: Protecting and Supporting Our Youth

11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

UnidosUS and the American Hospital Association recently formed an alliance to build healthier communities. This workshop will highlight national and local community efforts to create shared solutions, particularly around youth violence prevention and post-trauma support. This panel will also discuss trauma-informed programming and other methods that advance health and healing among our ethnically diverse youth groups growing up in America. Speakers include UnidosUS Deputy Vice President of the Institute for Hispanic Health Rita Carreón, UnidosUS Associate Director of the Institute for Hispanic Health Alejandra Gepp and Elizabeth Carrillo UnidosUS Program Manager of the Institute for Hispanic Health.

The Power of 18: Mobilizing the Latino Vote in the Midterm Election

With nearly a million more Latinos turning 18 every year, it’s clear that our youth have the potential to make a huge impact in future elections. This workshop will discuss effective strategies to unleash the power of the Latino electorate in 2018 as we take a look at voter perspectives, technology and community efforts to expand the Latino vote in these critical times. The workshop will be led by UnidosUS Senior Project Manager for Civic Engagement Janet Hernandez.

Join us for a candid discussion with prominent civil rights leaders on the current climate and what the future holds for the civil rights movement. The panel will include remarks from UnidosUS President and CEO Janet Murguía and will feature Chad Griffin, President of the Human Rights Campaign; Vanita Gupta, President and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights; Sherrilyn Ifill, President and Director-Counsel for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund; María Teresa Kumar, President and CEO of Voto Latino and Neera Tanden, President and CEO of the Center for American Progress. Pamela Silva Conde, Co-Host of Primer Impacto will emcee the Monday Luncheon.

Awards Gala Dinner

The Awards Gala will present five awards to Latino leaders and organizations that have shown stellar leadership in the fields of advocacy, philanthropy and communications. Come help us recognize the following awardees: Sonia Gutiérrez, President of Emeritus and Founder of the Carlos Rosario International Public Charter School; Ruby Corado, Founder and Executive Director of Casa Ruby; Lourdes Meluzá, former Senior National Correspondent of Univision Network and Darren Walker, President of the Ford Foundation. NBC Washington Anchor and Reporter, Erika Gonzalez will emcee the dinner.

Hispanics Fuel the U.S. Economy, So Why Is Our Personal Financial Future at Risk?

Recent headlines claim that Hispanics are “The World’s 7th-Biggest Economy” and that “Latinos Fuel the US Economy.” While there has been some good news with fewer Latinos falling below the poverty line as employment and household income have increased, Latinos have lagged in building personal wealth. This workshop allows participants to learn from the experts on how to build a financial future to empower Hispanic families, communities and the country’s economy. Speakers include UnidosUS alumna and JPMorgan Chase Foundation president Janis Bowdler, CNBC and Crooked media contributor; writer, speaker and social justice advocate Julissa Arce and the Mission Asset Fund CEO Jose Quiñones.
