What the research tells us about improving math outcomes for Latino students and English learners

The UnidosUS math policy project seeks to improve student success in Algebra I by 9th grade and college-level Math 101 during the freshman year. Grounded in research, the project centers the experiences and challenges of Latino students and English learners while advancing solutions that benefit all students. Co-published with our research partners, these three papers illuminate barriers Latino students and English learners face in accessing and succeeding in Algebra I and advanced mathematics coursework and identify research-informed recommendations for improving student outcomes.

Key themes around all three reports:

  • Access to rigorous algebra coursework.
  • District and state-level policy levers to improve outcomes.
  • Targeted academic supports for English learners, Latinos and other historically underserved students.
  • Evidence-based instructional strategies.
  • Data systems and accountability measures to monitor progress.
