2018 UnidosUS Capital Awards to Recognize Longtime Latino Trailblazers Reps. Luis V. Gutiérrez and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Alongside World Central Kitchen
Washington, DC—UnidosUS (formerly NCLR) will honor Congressman Luis V. Gutiérrez (D-IL) and Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) during the 31st Annual UnidosUS Capital Awards Gala, which recognizes elected officials from both parties who have shown a steadfast commitment to advancing legislation and public policies that benefit the Latino community. UnidosUS will present Representatives Gutiérrez and Ros-Lehtinen with the Lifetime Achievement Award for their decades-long tenure and service on behalf of the Latino community.
For years, Rep. Gutiérrez has served as a fierce champion for Latinos, using his powerful platform to fight and advocate for comprehensive immigration reform and other critical policies to empower Latinos. Beyond the halls of Congress, Gutiérrez has been a recognizable voice for marginalized and underserved groups, leveraging his profile and influence to denounce anti-immigrant policies and rhetoric. In her years as a dedicated public servant, Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen has helped advance legislation to empower her constituents, and as the first Latina congresswoman, pave the road for Latino representation and excellence.
This year’s Public Service Award honoree is World Central Kitchen, a nonprofit organization founded by Chef José Andrés, for the vital role it has played in addressing world hunger and poverty, and most recently, leading the charge to assist Puerto Rico in recovery efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.
More than 750 corporate, legislative and community leaders will be in attendance as UnidosUS President and CEO Janet Murguía presents the awards to the 2018 recipients. Erika Gonzalez of NBC4 Washington will serve as mistress of ceremonies at the event. Wells Fargo is the event chair.
