Advocacy groups weigh in on the consequences of noncompliance to state ESSA plan

WASHINGTON, DC—UnidosUS (formerly NCLR) will host a telephonic press briefing tomorrow, Wednesday, November 8, to discuss the current state of ESSA implementation in Florida and the implications for historically underserved groups. Education advocates and experts will weigh in on recent attempts from Florida education officials to skirt compliance with critical requirements of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), most notably, efforts to weaken or altogether opt out of enforcing strong accountability systems for English learners and students of colors. Speakers will address how the state’s education plan in its current form stands to jeopardize the academic progress of the more than 200,000 English learners in Florida’s public schools.
