Nearly 100 Education and Civil Rights Groups and Former OELA Directors Demand Answers Over Dissolution of the Department of Education Office of English Language Acquisition

A coalition of education, civil rights, and advocacy organizations sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Education opposing the planned closure of the Office of English Language Acquisition (OELA), warning that the decision would jeopardize support for more than five million English learner students nationwide. The letter raises concerns about disruptions to Title III programs, reduced technical assistance for states and schools, and the long-term impact on students, educators, and the future workforce. Ahead of the May 14 deadline to close the office, members of the National English Learners Roundtable expanded on these concerns during a virtual press briefing.
