UnidosUS Letter on Florida’s ESSA Plan

Letter

UnidosUS’s letter to Betsy DeVos, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education, opposing Florida’s Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) plan due to concerns about accountability for Latino and English Learner students.

Despite engaging with state officials and advocating for changes, the plan lacks crucial provisions, needed to ensure equitable education. Specifically, Florida’s plan overlooks key ESSA requirements, including English Language Proficiency (ELP) indicators, native language assessments, and subgroup accountability. We urge the U.S. Department of Education to reject Florida’s plan and uphold civil rights protections for vulnerable students.
