UnidosUS Statement on Governor Newsom Signing SB 1116 into Law
CALIFORNIA — UnidosUS welcomes Governor Gavin Newsom’s signing of SB 1116, the Strengthening the Starter Home Revitalization Act, an important step toward creating more homeownership opportunities for Latino and working families across California.
California has the second lowest homeownership rate in the country. Too many families who are ready to become homeowners face a housing market that offers too few homes at prices they can afford. Latino families, in particular, continue to face barriers to homeownership even as they represent a growing share of the state’s families and future homeowners.
SB 1116 addresses a critical piece of that challenge: the shortage of smaller, entry-level homes. By removing barriers that make it harder to build starter homes, including townhomes and small-lot homes, the law can help create more attainable options for families seeking their first home.
But in California,UnidosUS was proud to co-sponsor SB 1116 with CA YIMBY, Abundant Housing LA and Casita Coalition and work alongside Senator Anna Caballero to advance the legislation. We thank Senator Caballero for her leadership and Governor Newsom for signing the bill into law.
California’s housing policies should create pathways for working families to become homeowners and build lasting economic security. The signing of SB 1116 advances that goal, and UnidosUS will continue advocating for policies that expand housing supply, increase access to affordable homeownership and ensure Latino families can share in California’s prosperity.
