UnidosUS Mourns Passing of Reverend Jesse Jackson

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, UnidosUS President and CEO Janet Murguía released the following statement on the passing of civil rights leader Reverend Jesse Jackson:

“Our nation has lost one of our most influential and powerful voices in the fight for civil rights and racial justice. Reverend Jesse Jackson championed dignity, equity and freedom, in the United States and across the world, with his moral clarity and unshakeable leadership. I am forever grateful for his advocacy and commitment to the civil rights of every human being.

“UnidosUS has had a long history of working with Reverend Jackson and the Rainbow PUSH Coalition on issues of voting rights, immigration, economic opportunity and Black and Latino underrepresentation in film and television. We are very proud of that work which built on Reverend Jackson’s pioneering efforts to make American institutions in all sectors more inclusive.

“And as the first Black man to run major campaigns for president of the United States, he inspired generations of young people to run for office. His trailblazing path in this and so many other areas echoed his message to all young people that they should dream big and never allow others to determine their value.

“May his life and legacy remind us of the responsibility each of us carries to continue the ongoing work to stand up in defense of our most-cherished civil rights and liberties.”
