UnidosUS Honors Dolores Huerta and her Legacy of Courage and Resilience
WASHINGTON — Today, UnidosUS, the nation’s largest Latino civil rights and advocacy organization, mourns the loss of Dolores Huerta, a legendary labor leader and civil rights icon whose decades of organizing transformed the fight for farmworker rights and justice for women, immigrants and working families. President and CEO Janet Murguía released the following statement:
“Dolores Huerta was a force to be reckoned with, and today our familia has lost one of its greatest champions. Our hearts are broken, but the movement Dolores built is stronger than ever and inspires us to carry forward.
“Dolores was a fighter. She fought for farmworkers. She fought for women. She fought for immigrants, for children and for families. She fought for all of us, for more than 70 years, and she never stopped.
“She was told to sit down and be quiet. She stood up and spoke louder. She was called names. She was arrested. She was beaten. And still she showed up, again and again. She helped lead the grape boycott. She helped win real rights for farmworkers. And she gave us three words that still lift us up today: ‘¡Sí, se puede!’.
“For so many Latinas, myself included, Dolores showed us that we belong at the front of the line. We belong in the room. We belong at the table.
“We send our love to her children, her family and everyone at the Dolores Huerta Foundation. And we make her a promise: we will keep organizing. We will keep fighting. That is how we will honor her.
“Que en paz y en gloria descanses, Dolores. ¡Sí, se puede!”
