UnidosUS Calls on Senate to Reject Anti-Voter Legislation

So-called SAVE Act passed by U.S. House Republicans would effectively disenfranchise millions of eligible American voters, including Latinos

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would impose high new barriers to voting for millions, with severe impacts for Latino and rural voters regardless of their party affiliation.

UnidosUS Senior Director of Policy, Laura MacCleery, issued the following statement calling on the U.S. Senate to oppose this misguided and harmful bill:

“The disappointing vote today would move our democracy in the wrong direction. An estimated 21 million Americans would be disenfranchised and stripped from their right to vote including Latinos, disabled and older Americans, and rural and working people.

“Every state already verifies voter identity when people register, and maintains accurate voter rolls by comparing state and federal records. Yet this bill would require people to come to a state office in person, papers in hand, with a birth certificate or passport, just to be able to vote in any future election. It would also end mail-in and online voter registration and bar voter drives by both parties.

“This is voter suppression, plain and simple. At a time when we should be strengthening our ability to listen to voters, this bill would silence millions. UnidosUS urges the Senate to reject restrictive voter red tape, and instead to make it easier — not harder — to cast a ballot and be heard in our democracy.”
