UnidosUS Board of Directors Elects Dr. Maria Harper-Marinick as New Board Chair

It also welcomes new executive officers and Board members.

WASHINGTON, DC—UnidosUS, the nation’s largest Latino civil rights organization, is pleased to announce that Dr. Maria Harper-Marinick, a Senior Fellow for the College Excellence Program at The Aspen Institute, has been elected Chair of the UnidosUS Board of Directors. Dr. Harper-Marinick succeeds Luis Granados, who will remain on the Board as Immediate Past Chair for one year. Dr. Harper-Marinick is the first Dominican American elected as Board Chair of UnidosUS.

“Dr. Maria Harper-Marinick is a respected national leader in higher education and a strong advocate for equitable access to post-secondary opportunities,” said UnidosUS President and CEO Janet Murguía. “She has dedicated her career to transforming educational systems and being a champion for students. With our new strategic direction focused on changing systems and building power, Dr. Harper-Marinick has the right expertise and experience to help guide us in this moment. Dr. Harper-Marinick served the Maricopa Community College District, one of the largest in the nation, for nearly 30 years in various leadership roles, ultimately serving as Chancellor of the system. She is currently a Guided Pathways Coach for the Texas Success Center and a Distinguished Fellow of the Arizona State University Morrison Institute for Public Policy.

UnidosUS’s Board is a 22-member body composed of representatives from UnidosUS Affiliates, the private sector, elected officials and other partner organizations. Board members reflect the diversity of Hispanic subgroups and the geographic distribution of the U.S. Latino population. By mandate, the Board must include equal representation of men and women.
