UnidosUS Applauds Historic Appointment of Judge Maria Elena Cruz to the Arizona Supreme Court

PHOENIX, AZ — UnidosUS, the nation’s largest Latino civil rights and advocacy organization, applauds Governor Katie Hobbs’ appointment of Judge Maria Elena Cruz to the Arizona Supreme Court.

Once formally seated, Judge Cruz will make history as the first Latina and woman of color to serve on the state’s highest court. She will also be among the few women who have ever held a seat on the bench, bringing an essential perspective to Arizona’s judiciary.

Enrique Davis-Mazlum, UnidosUS Arizona State Director, issued the following statement:

“The appointment of Judge Maria Elena Cruz is a momentous step toward ensuring Arizona’s judiciary reflects the diversity of the communities it serves. Judge Cruz’s extensive judicial experience — spanning over two decades across tribal, superior, and appellate courts —demonstrates her unwavering commitment to justice and fairness. As the only candidate to receive unanimous support from the Arizona Commission on Appellate Court Appointments, her nomination is a testament to her qualifications, integrity and dedication to upholding the law. Judge Cruz’s appointment not only enhances representation on the bench but also serves as an inspiration for the next generation of legal professionals. We commend Governor Hobbs for this historic nomination and look forward to Judge Cruz’s contributions to the Arizona Supreme Court.”
