UnidosUS Alarmed Over Detention of Nonprofit Worker
WASHINGTON, DC — UnidosUS President and CEO Janet Murguía issued the following statement in response to ICE detaining Giovanna Hernandez Martinez, a nonprofit worker who collaborates with ¡HICA!, a UnidosUS Affiliate, and is a hardworking advocate who Alabama’s youth looks up to:
“This is another example of the administration’s indiscriminate immigration enforcement actions. They are not going after ‘the worst of the worst,’ but are instead detaining a hardworking, beloved member of the community. We want answers as to why a person without a criminal record and working with a nonprofit organization to help empower young people would be detained.
“We urge immigration authorities to consider her longstanding contributions and act with humanity and fairness to release her from detention.”
