Senior Cabinet Advisor Charles Kamasaki’s Book Wins Best Political/Current Affairs Book in English
“Immigration Reform: The Corpse That Will Not Die” honored with International Latino Book Award
WASHINGTON, DC—Charles Kamasaki, Senior Cabinet Advisor for UnidosUS (previously known as the National Council of La Raza), the nation’s largest Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization, recently won the International Latino Book Award’s first place for Best Political/Current Affairs Book in English for his book, “Immigration Reform: The Corpse That Will Not Die.”
The 2019 book details how the current debate over immigration has been influenced by the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA), which marked the last time a comprehensive immigration reform bill became law. Kamasaki, one of the country’s leading immigration experts who was directly involved in the hearings and debates surrounding the landmark legislation, recounts the roles of key figures and events that went into ultimately passing the reform bill. His book draws on that history to illustrate why immigration remains a constant debate in modern political discourse. It also the finalist for the 2019 INDIES Book of the Year Awards.
“In many ways, this book is the culmination of Charles’ life’s work as a civil rights activist who has fought tirelessly for the betterment of Latinos,” said UnidosUS President and CEO Janet Murguía. “His book is key to understanding our country’s complex relationship with immigration policy and how we got to this point. We at UnidosUS are very proud of Charles and his extraordinary efforts to capture a convoluted and often misunderstood history that offers important insights and shines a light on many unsung heroes along the way.”
Now in its 22nd year, the International Latino Book Awards are the largest Latino cultural awards in the US. Find more details about “Immigration Reform: The Corpse That Will Not Die” at www.charleskamasaki.com.
