UnidosUS: Dream and Promise Act of 2019 Provides Real Solutions to Families in Immigration Limbo

WASHINGTON, DC—Today, Representative Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA), alongside colleague Nydia Velazquez (D-NY), and other lead sponsors, introduced H.R. 6, the Dream and Promise Act of 2019, a bill that provides a pathway to citizenship for DREAMers as well as permanent legal protections for TPS (Temporary Protected Status) recipients.

“We want to thank Congresswomen Roybal-Allard and Velazquez for their leadership on this bill as well as Speaker Pelosi who has said that passage of the bill is a critical priority. We are encouraged that members of the House will support this common-sense, long-overdue solution so that these American families can be free of the shadow of uncertainty and fear of family separation,” said UnidosUS President and CEO Janet Murguía.

The legislation includes critical additions from prior versions including protections for TPS recipients, some of the country’s most vulnerable populations who have been displaced because of war, natural disasters and other life-threatening events in their home countries.

“With the introduction of the Dream and Promise Act of 2019, a bill that provides permanent solutions for DREAMers and critical protections for TPS recipients, we take a critical step forward in enacting true immigration solutions. For too many years, the lives of so many families have hung in limbo because of the Republican leadership’s inability or unwillingness to come to the table to reach a compromise. And in the past two years we’ve had to contend with a Trump administration bent on stripping away protections and enacting harsh and devastating immigration policies,” concluded Murguía.
