‘President Trump Has a Problem with the Constitution’

UnidosUS on Trump’s Unconstitutional Census Stunt
WASHINGTON, DC—In response to President Trump’s blatantly unconstitutional memo on not counting undocumented immigrants in the 2020 census, UnidosUS President and CEO Janet Murguía issued the following statement:

“Today’s presidential memorandum is yet another election year stunt from a president who is desperate to appeal to his base through xenophobia and bigotry. He already lost one Supreme Court battle on using the census as a political weapon, so now he’s trying this. But here are the facts: The president doesn’t have the power to overrule the 14th Amendment, which calls for ‘counting the whole number of persons in each State.’ That doesn’t mean just the people that President Trump wants to count; it means everyone, regardless of their citizenship status. If he has a problem with that, then he has a problem with the Constitution—but that’s been abundantly clear for some time.”
