NCLR Press Briefing to Address Impact of Senate GOP Health Bill on Latinos

PHOENIX—NCLR (National Council of La Raza) will hold a press briefing at the Phoenix Convention Center on Monday, July 10 at 2:30 p.m. during the 2017 NCLR Annual Conference, to urge elected leaders to reject the harmful GOP health care bill. NCLR will also release results of a straw poll of Conference participants on health coverage, and discuss how Latinos would be affected by the pending Republican health bill in the U.S. Senate. Rep. Ruben Gallego, Families USA Executive Director Frederick Isasi, and Arizona residents will join NCLR President and CEO Janet Murguía in examining how the bill would have a devastating impact on Latinos in Arizona and throughout the nation. 22 million Americans stand to lose their health coverage if the GOP bill passes. The plan also threatens to slash billions from Medicaid; one in five Americans and more than half all Latino children in the United States rely on the Medicaid program for their health coverage.

In addition to participating in the survey, attendees can stop by NCLR’s Advocacy Central at the Phoenix Convention Center July 8–10 to fill out postcards and voice their opinions to Arizona Senators John McCain and Jeff Flake, both of whom have expressed concern about the proposed legislation. The U.S. Senate returns to the nation’s capital on July 10 after a recess and is prepared to vote this month on this bill, which the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has found would strip 22 million Americans of health coverage and more than $770 billion from Medicaid. If the Senate approves this legislation, Arizona would lose $19 billion in federal Medicaid funds, and more than 927,000 Latinos in the state could lose their health insurance.
