PHOENIX—On Sunday, July 9, highlights of the 2017 NCLR (National Council of La Raza) Annual Conference include a town hall on tax reform with former Arizona Representative and former NCLR Board Chair Ed Pastor, along with a Latinas Brunch featuring journalist and writer Sandra Guzman, author and immigrant rights advocate Julissa Arce, and Maricopa Community College Chancellor Maria Harper-Marinick.

Other notable events of the day include an immigration policy workshop, evening receptions to honor the work of two Affiliates in the area of health and LGBTQ issues. Press registration is free, and a full list of events and workshops is available online.

The 115th Congress: The Landscape and Forecast on Latino Priorities

In this workshop, NCLR policy experts in health, education, immigration and economics will explain initiatives to protect and defend the Latino community in a challenging political and legislative environment against efforts to dismantle many policies and programs designed to improve Latinos’ lives and opportunities.

National Latino Family Expo®

Come and join in the fun at the National Latino Family Expo, which is free and open to the public! With more than 150 exhibitors, six unique pavilions, informative resources, health screenings and entertainment, there is something for everyone. Children can enjoy a toddler play area, get free backpacks, and attend storytime with their favorite PBS characters including Daniel Tiger or Curious George from PBS Kids, Nickelodeon’s Dora the Explorer, the GEICO gecko, the Phoenix Suns’s Gorilla and more. There will be an opportunity to interact with potential local employers looking to recruit local talent, and people of all ages will enjoy prizes, giveaways, and innovative displays of cars and art celebrating Latino heritage.

Join us for a brunch celebrating Latina empowerment. Co-hosted by NCLR President and CEO Janet Murguía and NCLR Board Chair Renata Soto, this event features a panel of accomplished women, including Journalist, Author and Writer Sandra Guzman; Political Commentator, Author and Immigrant Rights Advocate Julissa Arce; and Maricopa Community College Chancellor Maria Harper-Marinick.

Town Hall: Debating for Change: Latinos Stake in Tax Reform

Congress is expected to work on tax reform in the coming months, which will impact how our nation invests in our future, supports working families, spurs economic growth and can even reduce poverty. Come hear from Ed Pastor, former Arizona Representative and former NCLR Board Chair; William Beach, Vice President of Policy and Research, The George Mason University Mercatus Center; and Michael Ettlinger, Director, University of New Hampshire The Carsey School of Public Policy.

Immigration: Fighting for Policies that Match America’s Ideals

Panelists will share perspectives, actionable strategies and tools from the fight against Arizona’s racial profiling law SB 1070, the intensifying battle against Texas’ copycat law SB 4 and efforts to defend safe cities and hold the line against anti-immigrant measures being pushed at the federal level. Speakers include NCLR Deputy Vice President Clarissa Martinez De Castro, Promise Arizona Executive Director Petra Falcon, Lorain Police Department Chief Celestino (Cel) Rivera, and Border Network for Human Rights Executive Director Fernando Garcia.
