PHOENIX—The 2017 NCLR (National Council of La Raza) Annual Conference begins on Saturday, July 8 at the Phoenix Convention Center, with most activities taking place in the North Building. NCLR President and CEO Janet Murguía will deliver a speech to attendees at the Affiliate Luncheon, where Arizona Community Foundation President and CEO Steven G. Seleznow will also be a featured speaker. NCLR’s Health Summit, which runs concurrently with the Conference, will have National Association of Hispanic Nurses President Anabell Castro-Thompson participate in the Health Summit’s opening session.

The first day of the Conference will also include a town hall, which will focus on the vital role of community colleges in meeting the needs of Latino students. NCLR’s Líderes Summit, which also runs concurrently with Conference, will give youth leaders attending the opportunity to learn about the Latino civil rights movement from former NCLR Board Chair Daniel Ortega, Jr., among others.

Saturday also marks the first day of the National Latino Family Expo, which kicks off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Janet Murguía and beloved children’s characters such as Nickelodeon’s Dora the Explorer and PBS Kids’ Daniel Tiger.

NCLR’s Institute of Hispanic Health Deputy Vice President Rita Carreón will open the Health Summit with keynote speaker Anabell Castro-Thompson, President, National Association of Hispanic Nurses, who will address social justice in our health care system.

Celebrate the start of Expo with NCLR President and CEO Janet Murguía, who will be joined by beloved characters including Nickelodeon’s Dora the Explorer, and PBS Kids’ Daniel Tiger. With more than 150 exhibitors and six themed pavilions, there’s something for everyone in the family to enjoy.

Come and join in the fun at the National Latino Family Expo, which is free and open to the public! With more than 150 exhibitors, six unique pavilions, informative resources, health screenings and entertainment, there is something for everyone. Children can enjoy a toddler play area, get free backpacks, and attend storytime with their favorite PBS characters including Daniel Tiger or Curious George from PBS Kids, Nickelodeon’s Dora the Explorer, the GEICO gecko, the Phoenix Suns’s Gorilla and more. There will be an opportunity to interact with potential local employers looking to recruit local talent, and people of all ages will enjoy prizes, giveaways, and innovative displays of cars and art celebrating Latino heritage.

Protecting Our Students and Their Families from the Threat of Deportation

This American Federation of Teachers’ workshop looks at the critical role of educators in keeping learning environments free from the threat of deportation, racism, bullying and hate. Tools and resources are available to educators, school staff and community partners to help undocumented students fight back against the attacks, defend DACA and prepare for an ICE raid.

National Affiliate Luncheon

Steven G. Seleznow, President and CEO, Arizona Community Foundation, will deliver this year’s keynote address. The luncheon—which will be emceed by Pamela Silva Conde, Co-Anchor of “Primer Impacto”—will also feature remarks from NCLR Board Chair Renata Soto and Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, and a speech by NCLR President and CEO Janet Murguía.
Renata Soto will present NCLR’s Family Strengthening Awards to the 2017 Affiliate honorees.

Town Hall: The Promise of Higher Education

Join NCLR’s Peggy McLeod as she leads a discussion about strategies for Latino student enrollment and retention at community colleges with panelists Daniel Greenstein, Director of Education, Postsecondary Success in the United States Program, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; Juan Salgado, Chancellor, City Colleges of Chicago; and Michelle Siqueiros, President, The Campaign for College Opportunity.

Líderes Legacy Session: The Making of America: U.S. History Through the Latino Lens

This special session will allow the youth leaders at the NCLR Líderes Summit to learn about the Latino civil rights movement, its history and heroes from former NCLR Board Chair Daniel Ortega, Jr.; Stella Pope Duarte, author of “Raul H. Yzaguirre: Seated at the Table of Power;” Estuardo Rodriguez, Executive Director, Friends of the National Museum of the American Latino; and Viridiana Hernandez, Executive Director, Center for Neighborhood Leadership.
