UnidosUS Announces New Highlights for 2018 Annual Conference and 50th Anniversary Celebration
WASHINGTON, DC— On Saturday, July 7, UnidosUS will kick off its 2018 Annual Conference—”The Next 50 Years: Leading with Tenacity, Courage, and Purpose”—at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC. This event is the largest gathering of its kind in the Hispanic community and consists of four days of thorough and cutting-edge workshops addressing critical issues like civil rights, diversity, health, financial empowerment and immigration. At Conference, attendees have the ultimate opportunity to hear and learn from elected officials and prominent leaders representing the philanthropic, academic and corporate sectors. Toyota is the Title Sponsor of this year’s Annual Conference.
Among our powerful roster of featured speakers are former President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America and author of Make Trouble, Cecile Richards; Bryan Stevenson, Founder and Executive Director of the Equal Justice Initiative; Darren Walker, President and CEO of the Ford Foundation; Michelle Poler, founder of Hello Fears and the creator of the 100 Days Without Fear Project; Alicia Menendez, editor at Bustle and host of the Latina to Latina podcast; Vanita Gupta, President and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights; Center for American Progress President and CEO Neera Tanden; President and CEO of Voto Latino Maria Teresa Kumar; MSNBC news correspondent Mariana Atencio and our President and CEO Janet Murguía, among others.
Monday’s Luncheon will bring together esteemed civil rights champions representing the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, NAACP, Center for American Progress, the Human Rights Campaign and Voto Latino for a candid conversation about the course of civil rights and the work that lies ahead. Additionally, our Latinas Brunch will lift up the voices of female trailblazers across different industries who are breaking barriers and carving their own path to success. This year’s event will also include a Future Changemakers experience aimed at young Latino professionals. The workshop sessions will provide participants access to information and tools to support a successful journey through college and subsequent career path, as well as workshops focused on leadership and professional development.
Each day of Conference will also feature an interactive plenary session led by experts and thought leaders tackling timely topics that explore the state of the Latino community in the current climate:
- Our first plenary session, “Healthy Minds, Healthy Communities: A Real Conversation About Mental and Emotional Well-Being”, will spotlight the importance of social and emotional well-being among Latinos, especially during these divisive times.
- “Our Time Is Now: How Latinos’ Success in Education, Innovation, and at the Polls Will Drive the Nation Forward” will address the integral role Latinos have played and will continue to play in shaping our nation going forward.
- Our third plenary session, “Hispanics Fuel the U.S. Economy, So Why Is Our Personal Financial Future at Risk?”, will tackle the barriers that continue to impact Latinos’ path to a stable financial future.
