Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard, Al R. Cardenas and Monica Ramirez will be this year’s award recipients at the Gala event

Washington, DC—UnidosUS (formerly NCLR) will present the annual Capital Awards to this year’s honorees Representative Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA 40) and Al Cardenas, Former Chairman of the American Conservative Union and current Senior Partner at Squire Patton Boggs. Monica Ramirez, founder and president of Justice for Migrant Women and the co-founder of Alianza Nacional de Campesinas will be presented with the organization’s Public Service Award.

The evening gala is celebrating its 32nd year of honoring the advocates, public figures, and politicians who are champions for the Latino community—a night to acknowledge those who are at the forefront of national issues that affect Hispanics, and those who empower Latinos to define and achieve their own American Dream.

Honoree Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard has championed legislation to improve access to health care, boost job creation, expand educational opportunities and bring justice and equity into our nation’s immigration policies. Roybal-Allard was the first Mexican American woman elected to Congress in 1992, and through her tenacity and leadership, she’s risen through the ranks of Congress to become the first Latina to serve as chair of a House Appropriations Subcommittee.

Al R. Cardenas, currently Senior Partner at Squire Patton Boggs, was the first Hispanic elected as Chairman of the Republican Party of Florida and Chairman of the American Conservative Union. Cardenas, who came to the United States from his native Cuba as a teenager, has been a key ally for Latino causes and a staunch defender of Hispanic civil rights.

Monica Ramirez, founder and president of Justice for Migrant Women and the co-founder of Alianza Nacional de Campesinas, was recently recognized by Smithsonian Magazine’s 2018 American Ingenuity Award for Social Progress. Ramírez is the daughter of migrant farmworkers in Ohio and has dedicated her life’s work to defend the rights of workers, women and immigrants.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA 12), will be the gala’s keynote speaker. Speaker Pelosi has been a steadfast and dedicated ally and advocate for the Latino community during her tenure in the House of Representatives. She has been a key voice and a strong leader on issues critical to Latinos, championing affordable healthcare, a just immigration system, and expanded educational opportunities, among others. Speaker Pelosi is the first woman in history to serve as Speaker of the House of Representatives.
