UnidosUS Releases Report on Latino Voter Trends and the 2020 Election
WASHINGTON, DC— UnidosUS has released a new report on the power of the Latino vote titled “Latino Voters and the 2020 Election: Numbers, Parties, and Issues.” This is the first of a three-part series on the Latino electorate. The report, made public during the 2020 UnidosUS Annual Conference, takes a closer look at the makeup, distribution and participatory trends of the Latino electorate as we head towards November.
Following a 2018 midterm election in which 11.2 million Latinos voted, Latinos are set to play a decisive role in the presidential election where they are expected to be the second-largest voting group.
“Latinos are one of the country’s fastest growing electorates, and 80% of those registered end up voting in presidential elections,” said UnidosUS Deputy Vice President of Policy and Advocacy Clarissa Martinez de Castro. “We are a young community, with many first-time voters and nearly a million coming of voting age every year. That is why registration and outreach are critical, and we are using all the tools at our disposal to raise our community’s voice in the voting booth.”
Ninety-five percent of Latinos under age 18 are U.S. citizens, and each year nearly one million turn 18, making this cohort a major source fueling Latino voter growth for decades to come. However, registration and voting participation by 18 to 24-year-old Latino citizens of voting age is currently about 10 percentage points lower than for other Latino age cohorts.
Parts two and three in this series will cover factors in the election process that could impact the Latino vote, including vote by mail trends, as well as trends among Hispanic voters when it comes to party and candidate support and the top issues voters want to see addressed.
