Casas y Carreras (Homes & Jobs): Connecting Job Training & Homeownership for Latinos
Homes and jobs go hand in hand. That’s why we are launching a pilot initiative, Casas y Carreras, to support innovative, community-led solutions that build more affordable housing and strengthen the workforce pipeline in the homebuilding sector.
In 2024, the Latino homeownership rate was 49.5% compared to 73.5% for white households. For many Latinos, homeownership represents family, stability, and belonging — and is the principal means of building wealth. According to the Urban Institute, by 2023, Latinos will account for 78% of new workers, and over the next 20 years, Latinos will make up 70% of net new homeowners. However, forecasts are not guarantees; many Latino families face persistent barriers to achieving homeownership.
That’s why UnidosUS has made its HOME (Home Ownership Means Equity) initiative a cornerstone of its long-term strategy to build wealth for Latinos. Our goal is to expand opportunities that will result in 4 million new Latino homeowners by 2030.
Latinos are increasingly critical to the U.S. housing sector and economy, as home buyers, homeowners, home builders, and members of the housing workforce. Hispanics are now the country’s second-largest ethnic group, contributing over a quarter of a trillion dollars in annual taxes. And it’s estimated that by 2030, one out of every five employees in the United States is Latino.
The future of the housing sector depends on a strong, well-prepared Latino workforce. With vital support from donors like you, UnidosUS brings together two of our longstanding cornerstone programs, housing and workforce development, to tackle three critical challenges: the growing shortage of skilled labor, the need for pathways to high-quality jobs, and the challenges to homeownership.
Casas y Carreras addresses the intersection of workforce development, homeownership, and wealth creation. UnidosUS will partner with local organizations, including our Affiliates, in markets where each pilot site will expand the supply of affordable housing and strengthen the workforce pipeline in the homebuilding sector.
Launching this fall, the pilot will run for one year, with partner sites to support community-based organizations that are building homes and career pathways, helping Latino families access stable housing and long-term economic opportunity. By funding programs that link home production to workforce development, the initiative invests in both housing equity and job creation.
Your invaluable support makes it possible to design programs that break down barriers and provide opportunities for our communities. Thank you!
