The 2015 NCLR Health Summit Will Have a lot of Texas flavor!
Since it’s first year, the NCLR Health Summit has traveled all over the country to visit emerging and historical Latino communities. We visited New Orleans in 2013, followed by Los Angeles last year. This year, the Summit will take place in the state known for its pride: Texas. In celebration of the Latino community in the state, we have invited many Texas leaders to speak to our attendees about how the built environment—the places we live, work, and play—affects health. Here’s a preview of what four of our speakers plan to share with Summit attendees.
Dr. Esteban López will kick off the 2015 NCLR Health Summit during our opening breakfast on September 22. He will share examples of exciting work to improve the built environment that are happening throughout the state of Texas. In addition to being a practicing physician, he is also a member of the San Antonio Mayor’s Fitness Council Executive Committee. His unique perspective will provide critical context to the discussions we will have at the 2015 NCLR Health Summit.
Dr. Nicolas Musi is the director of the Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio. The Barshop Institute’s mission includes training future practitioners and promoting public awareness of age related issues. Dr. Musi will discuss healthy aging initiatives taking place in Texas during our “Healthy Aging in the Hispanic Community” panel on September 22.
Dr. Amelie G. Ramirez will continue the conversation around Latinos in Texas and the built environment at our breakfast on September 23. Throughout her career, she has worked on public health interventions around areas such as tobacco use and healthy lifestyles. Her research experience will be a great complement to the on the ground perspective that will be shared throughout the Summit.
Ana Primera will give attendees important tips on how we can all stay healthy while at work during our “Workplace Wellness” session on September 22. Her presentation will include a demonstration of light stretches and exercise you can do at your desk! Ana is an active member of the Mayors Fitness Council in San Antonio. She is not only a Certified Clinical Nutritionist but also a Zumba Instructor and Personal Trainer.
