UnidosUS: Congressional Dysfunction Fails DACA Relief Once Again

WASHINGTON, DC—Today, UnidosUS (formerly NCLR) expressed deep disappointment in congressional leadership for passing yet another stopgap bill that does not include a firm DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) fix, even though a CBS News poll released this weekend showed that nearly nine out of every 10 Americans support relief for DREAMers.

“We are angered that the President and the congressional Republican leadership spent the weekend, not negotiating a compromise but instead defaming and demonizing DACA recipients. The will of the American people is clear—they do not want to see DREAMers deported—yet the administration and Republican leaders are still catering to the tiniest and most extreme elements of their base,” noted UnidosUS President and CEO Janet Murguía.”

“The inclusion of long-term funding for CHIP is a key step forward and should not be overlooked. But we are very disappointed that the Democratic leadership did not adequately make the case to the American people of why the issues they were fighting for, such as disaster relief, health care and DACA, are matters of life and death and should not be treated as political bargaining chips. Our message to both parties—do better for our country,” concluded Murguía.
