Last Week, I Met With President Obama….
By Janet Murguía, President and CEO, NCLR
Today, I am at the Capitol to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee. This is a critical moment in the push for immigration reform, and I want to take a moment to update you on how far we have already come. Ever since 12 million Latinos turned out to vote last November, this has no longer been a story about the little engine that could. Our community is a massive train leading the way for immigration reform. And let me tell you, that train has left the station.
Just last week, I joined other immigration, labor, and civil rights leaders in the White House to meet with President Obama. I have to tell you, I was very proud to sit directly across the table from the president as the Latino community’s representative in this conversation. The president’s message came through loud and clear: the administration understands that the time for immigration reform is now, and they are ready to work with us to get it done. He agrees that ensuring citizenship for the 11 million aspiring Americans in our country must form the core of any immigration proposal. NCLR has been at the forefront of this push for many years, and I promise you that we will see this through to the very end.
We cannot afford to let this moment pass! Your support will ensure that NCLR seizes every opportunity on the table for reform. This morning as I testify before the Senate, I am encouraged by knowing that Obama, along with a sizable portion of Congress, understands the moral, economic, and political imperatives of getting this done. I’m going to tell them just how much our community needs this reform, and how equally important it is for our country as a whole. We are a nation of immigrants, and our country’s strength is grounded in our ability to work together as fellow Americans.
Every contribution, no matter how large or small, will make a difference in helping us pass immigration reform, so please join our effort!
