UnidosUS President and CEO Janet Murguía brings our issues to the U.S. Capitol

We all know that these last two years have been difficult for our community and all Americans who believe in justice and fairness. And we all saw this righteous anger turned into action as millions turned out to vote in November.

Now thanks to your participation we have the most diverse Congress in U.S. history. That means the fight continues to make sure we build on the progress our communities have made.

Since its founding in 1968, UnidosUS has counted on allies from across the political spectrum. It is due to our unique combination of dedicated Affiliates, our leading-edge programs work, and our expertise in advocating for policies that can make the American dream a reality for all Latinos.

This week our President and CEO Janet Murguía met with longtime and new allies in Congress as part of our work to fight for Hispanic Americans. Murguía met with Senators Catherine Cortez Masto and Patty Murray, as well as Rep. Bennie G. Thompson, who is the new chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security.

“[Thompson and I] had a great conversation talking about the tragedy of family separations and the importance of oversight and accountability, and of reuniting children with their parents,” Murguía explained.

“We also talked about interior enforcement. Six million children have been separated from their parents because of raids that have happened inside the United States,” she added.

Cortez Masto is the first Latina senator and a champion of Latino families. Representing Nevada, Cortez Masto serves in the Finance Committee and the Housing Committee. Murguía and the Senator spoke about upcoming issues on those fronts. “Most importantly, we talked about this budget shutdown and the importance of making sure we avoid it at all costs in the future,” Murguía said.
