Latina robotics whizzes are proving they’re the future of engineering

This year, UnidosUS—formerly NCLR—will host its 2018 Annual Conference and 50th Anniversary Celebration in Washington, DC.

As we look back on the progress we have made during the past 50 years and look forward to the work ahead, it’s a good time to look back on a story from last year’s Annual Conference in Phoenix, Arizona.

We’re talking about Degrees of Freedom, an all-girl robotics team in Arizona that showcased engineering’s female and Latina future.

Latina robotics whizzes are proving that they’re the future of engineering

An all-women robotics team in Arizona is showing that the future of engineering is here and now—and Latinas are leading the way!

“As a girl and engineer, we’ve always been taught that women are the future in STEM, and we are striving to make that the possibility in the future,” says Camila Treviño, member of the mostly-Latina all-girls robotics team Degrees of Freedom.

The Arizona group do demonstrations and community service in the Phoenix area. They also participate in state and international robotics competitions, where they compete mostly against boys.

Treviño loves the opportunity to showcase what they do and see what other groups are doing.

“It’s inspiring seeing people succeed,” she says. “We want to make sure that everyone else has an equal opportunity in STEM.”
