Teaching English Language Learners in Low-Incidence Settings

Research Report

While it is not easy, there are several strategies that will help teachers craft lessons that challenge English-proficient students and provide support for students learning English. Some strategies involve differentiating instruction for English language learners (ELLs) by adapting the text, scaffolding writing assignments, and modifying teacher talk. Other strategies, such as building on prior knowledge, providing more opportunities for interaction, and creating a nonthreatening classroom environment, involve changes to the classroom that benefit English language learners and English-only students.
