Perspectivas Públicas: Short Answers to Common Questions about Bilingual Education
Few educational programs have been as persistently clouded by misperceptions, biased media coverage, and lack of public understanding as has bilingual education. This educational approach, designed to improve both the English proficiency and the general educational attainment of limited English proficient children has been bombarded by criticism throughout most of its young existence. Some problems have resulted from a lack of adequate information, others, unfortunately, from the lingering effects of racism and ethnocentrism in our society.
This article addresses only the resistance and objections born out of the lack of information. The types of questions answered here are the sort often asked by people who are sincerely puzzled and genuinely want to know.
