Running for a Cause: Proyecto Juan Diego’s Sisters on the Run

Texas-based UnidosUS Affiliate Proyecto Juan Diego holds its annual “Sisters on the Run” as a fun, health-focused community event to raise funds. Earlier this year, in collaboration with the Brownsville Fire Department, the newly revamped event included a timed 5K, a 1-mile fun run and raised over $28,000 in support of the organization’s crucial work.

Since its inception in 2003, Proyecto Juan Diego’s mission has been to empower low-income families to be healthy and self-sufficient community members through educational programs, family-focused activities and preventative health services. Offering a comprehensive approach, the organization carries out its mission through programs such as parenting education, GED and ESL certifications, immigration services, diabetes prevention, mental health counseling, and voter registration among others.

Proyecto Juan Diego is one of nearly 300 community-based UnidosUS Affiliates directly serving the Latinos across the country. Affiliates understand, firsthand, the practical concerns and policy issues impacting their communities and respond with innovative solutions. Our relationship with our Affiliates is vital to our mission; through our capacity-building support, policy analysis, advocacy and special initiatives that complement the work of our Affiliates, we can continue to improve opportunities for Hispanic Americans.
