UnidosUS President and CEO: Padilla for U.S. Senate ‘The True Achievement of the American Dream’

Praise for Gov. Newsom’s historic choice for Harris’ Senate seat

December 22, 2020

WASHINGTON, DCIn response to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s appointment of California Secretary of State Alex Padilla to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by the election of Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, UnidosUS President and CEO Janet Murguía issued the following statement:

“This is a momentous day for the Latino community, not only in California but across the country, as Governor Gavin Newsome has appointed Secretary of State Alex Padilla as California’s next Senator. Thanks to Governor Newsom’s historic and inspiring decision, California’s Latinos, the largest community in the largest state in the country, will at long last be represented in the U.S. Senate for the first time in the state’s 170-year history.

“Alex Padilla is an exceptional choice to represent all Californians in the Senate. The son of immigrants who was the first in his family to go to college at MIT, he has devoted his life to public service and is the true achievement of the American Dream. And as our country faces an unprecedented set of challenges in the coming year, Senator-designate Padilla can be counted on to fight for the health and well-being of all families, for diversity and inclusion, and for fairness and equality.”
