With Government Shutdown Averted, It’s Time for Congress to Shift Attention to Immigration Reform

February 15, 2019

WASHINGTON, DC—Janet Murguía, President and CEO of UnidosUS (formerly the National Council of La Raza), released the following statement on the passage of a border security deal that would prevent another partial government shutdown:

“Last night, Congressional leaders worked in a bipartisan fashion to solve the impasse and prevent another needless and devastating government shutdown. For that, they should be commended. But just keeping the government open should not be the value that we aspire to as Americans, not even by a long shot. We now call on these leaders to immediately apply this same spirit to actually achieving a bipartisan solution that lives up to our ideals and that achieves a more fair, humane, and effective immigration system, and that includes a permanent fix for DREAMers and relief for TPS recipients.”
